About Friends of Ben Rinnes
Established in 1996. Charity Formed in 2003
Friends of Ben Rinnes is a volunteer-led Scottish Charity dedicated to maintaining the main path and promoting the protection of the surrounding environment.
The organisation was established in 1996 in response to growing concerns about path erosion and increased footfall on the hill.
Today, that responsibility continues.
Since then, significant work has been carried out to stabilise and improve the route to the summit, combining professional path construction with long-term volunteer maintenance.
Today, that responsibility continues.

Our Role Now
- Maintaining the main path to the summit
- Carrying out regular repairs and drainage work
- Preventing path widening and erosion
- Supporting infrastructure such as the car park
- Working collaboratively with estates and local partners
Much of this work is carried out by a dedicated and enthusiastic group of volunteers, supported where needed by specialist contractors.
If you see us on the hill, please say hi and ask us about the work. We’re normally in hi-vis orange vests. We are extremely friendly and it gives us an excuse to catch our breath!
About Us
About Ben Rinnes
From its granite summit, the views extend across the Moray Firth, the Northern Highlands, and south towards the Cairngorms.
On clear days!
It is both a landmark and a lived landscape. Beloved by locals, photographers and artists.
Like all landscapes under pressure it requires care.
How We Work
We meet throughout the year and hold an AGM each May, open to anyone with an interest in the hill and its future.
Help Us Care for the Ben
